MIUI 6: Review

Hi Guys,

A more colourful, minimalist interface with supposedly enhanced security features, has been launched by hot-shot company Xiaomi, namely MIUI 6, alongside the launch of Xiaomi Redmi 2.

Devices such as Xiaomi Mi 4, Xiaomi Mi 3, and other products will receive the MIUI 6 official update in the next couple of months after another round of developer testing.

Features are described as below –

Phone Book

The phonebook has become more powerful – it allows you to identify unknown callers, mark service numbers (as banks, scams, sales) and see a visible menu of your carrier’s hotline (instead of having to listen to “for ‘blah blah blah’ select 8”).

MI Account

Your MI account requires a two-step sign in authentication, so that only you can get access to your information. The privacy and security of content is given utmost importance. MI Cloud and other such features works with MI Account

MI Cloud

Mi Cloud lets you back up your photos over the cloud, allowing you to view them from anytime, anywhere. It creates a shared photo stream and you can also see your photos and videos on this stream on your MI Pad, MI Phone, MI TV and more. You can also choose to share your content with your friends and family. With distributed data storage mechanisms on MI Cloud, all data received is encrypted. It lets access to contacts, messages, call logs and more from anywhere. With 10 GB of free storage and more powerful features, It is said to be a better counterpart of Apple’s iCloud.


MIUI 6 comes with an enhanced power-saving mode to adjust the standby time of your device. You will no longer have to worry about running out of battery at moments when you need it the most. MIUI 6 introduces various RAM optimization techniques, which allow applications to run more efficiently. It is much faster and super awesome, than its predecessor. Some of the RAM Optimization techniques are – Smart CGroup, ZRAM, Bitmap Cache, TrimHeaps.


The MIUI 6’s design is natural and intuitive, just the way it should be. It’s visually stunningly simple. It’s the start of a new minimalist era in terms of Custom ROMs.

Home Screen

It features all new icons. The home screen has always been the central place to switch between apps and enable or disable features. Within MIUI 6, global operation gestures that are also optimized for devices with large screens. Batch organize icons, quick search tools and other features are easy, intuitive, and even fun to use.

Access the notification Center from any screen, even the lock screen. Just swipe down and up to call out the global search panel.


Starting with the transparent, glass looks of backgrounds and wallpapers, going through the similar, flat style and single-color backdrop for icons, and finishing off with the appearance of apps like the calendar, compass, timer, calculator, and so on that are a nearly identical copy of their Apple counter-parts, it seems that Xiaomi is literally taking the best out of Apple’s system and Android’s customize


MI Cloud allows you to sync bookmarks in the MIUI Browser. You can browse web sites on your Mi Phone and continue them from your MI Pad. It is said to be counterpart of Apple’s Continuity.

  1. Nice review. Screenshots from personal device is a nice touch.
    Good segregation of different features under separate headings.

    Not sure why the pics in the end are overlapping. Maybe you can give space between them. Also currently images are hotlinked to bigger version of themselves but opens in same tab. If you edit the hyperlink, you can set it to open in “new tab”. Which would be preferred option.
